DOS has a command built right into your system that can trace down the origins of an IP address. However, this can be tricky because IP addresses are assigned dynamically, which means a user will get a different one each time they log on. If you want to find information about someone's physical location, type tracert and their IP number at the DOS prompt. The command would look something like this: tracert 123.456.9.178. To find out more about this function, try typing tracert in DOS.

Another helpful command if you're using UNIX is nslookup, which queries Internet Domain Name Servers. Nslookup can also be used to print a list of hosts under a domain.

How much information can you glean from an IP address? Here are some places that provide assistance:

1. First find out the domain name from the IP number by looking it up at DNSLookUp or IPIndex.
2. To get a location go to Network Solutions (or telnet directly to telnet:whois.internic.net)and type in whois "domain name".
3. If you have no luck at the Internic database, try the ARIN database.
4. If the domain is overseas try Here.

Unix servers often run an Ident Daemon that allows other computers to identify people connected to them.
